Preparing Fitted Wardrobes For Staining Or Varnishing

Staining and varnishing fitted wardrobes are great ways to brighten up and add shine those storage areas. There is nothing better than having a clean and tidy bedroom and bright, organised storage space.

Sand and Clean

When preparing to stain or varnish, we begin by filling and sealing all holes. Removing the doors and fittings, we make each section ready for sanding.

We use a power sander wherever possible. Fine-Grit sandpaper gives us a smooth surface. A sanding block is sufficient for any areas that we are not able to reach with the sander.

All dust is then cleaned and we remove any leftover sand using a damp lint-free cloth. Finally, we wipe with a dry cloth.

The area should be completely free of dust before we begin to apply stain or varnish. It is important to give a final hoover and wipe down everything in the surrounding area.

Stain and Seal

We apply the stain or varnish as soon as possible to avoid dust collecting. This could easily affect the quality of the final look if it is not taken into account.

We leave to soak in accordance with the richness of colour we need to achieve. The deeper the colour desired, the longer the stain or varnish can sit.

Once the stain/varnish has absorbed sufficiently, we wipe off the excess with a dry lint-free cloth. We can then apply a second coat if we need a slightly richer finish.

Again, we remove the excess. We sand lightly, taking care to remove all dust by wiping down with a damp cloth. One final hoover, then we can apply the last layer of stain.

Finally, we seal with polyurethane for a clean and professional finish.
